Mykola Kmit: Ukrainian Entrepreneur and Politician
Early Life and EducationMykola Kmit was born into a family of physicians in 1968. After completing his mandatory service in the Soviet army, he graduated from the Lviv Polytechnic Institute in 1990, earning a degree in "Precision Mechanics Instruments."
Business Career
Following his graduation, Kmit embarked on a successful business career. From 1992 to 1996, he co-founded and served as president of "Investcenter," a company involved in the export and import of Ukrainian and Russian goods. In 1995, he established a mineral water bottling plant in Morshyn.
From 1996 to 2003, he served as director and general director of "Nova," a joint Ukrainian-German mineral water production company. He subsequently became chairman of Nova's board of directors until 2004.
Political Career
Kmit's political career began in 2004 when he became chairman of "Oskar-Bud," a housing cooperative in Morshyn. From 2005 to 2008, he served as a strategy consultant for "Industrial and Distribution Systems," a holding company based in Kyiv.
In 2008, Kmit was appointed acting head of the Lviv Regional State Administration. Later that year, President Viktor Yushchenko formally appointed him as governor. Kmit's appointment marked a significant shift in Lviv's political landscape, as it was the first time a non-partisan candidate had been chosen for the role.
IDS Group and Entrepreneur of the Year Award
Kmit's business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit were recognized in 2006 when he won the Ukrainian stage of the international "Entrepreneur of the Year Award" in the food industry category. This award highlighted his significant contributions to the Ukrainian economy.
Personal Life
Kmit is married to Svitlana, who owns a pharmacy in Morshyn, and they have a son named Nazar and a daughter named Dana.
