Grigory Vasil'yevich Zabolotsky: Boyar and Diplomat
Grigory Vasil'yevich Zabolotsky (dates unknown) was a prominent boyar and diplomat during the reigns of Grand Princes Ivan III and Vasily III of Muscovy.
Early Years and Diplomatic Assignments
Grigory was the son of boyar Grigory Vasil'yevich Zabolotsky. Along with his brother Konstantin, he played a significant role in diplomatic relations with Lithuania, receiving its embassy in Moscow in January 1495. He also accompanied Ivan III to Novgorod, along with his other brothers, Vasily and Peter.
Missions to Crimea and Western Europe
In 1502, Grigory was dispatched as an ambassador to the Crimean Khanate, where he met with Khan Mengli I Giray. In 1516, he embarked on a more ambitious mission to the Holy Roman Empire, seeking to forge an alliance against Polish-Lithuanian King Sigismund I.
Negotiations with the Teutonic Order
On his return journey from the West, Grigory had a meeting with Albrecht, Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Albrecht expressed his desire to enter into a union with the Grand Prince of Muscovy, paving the way for potential future alliances between the two powers.
