Sisonke Msimang: A Journey Through Exile, Activism, and Writing
Early Life and EducationSisonke Msimang, born in Zambia in 1974, grew up in an exiled community with her South African freedom fighter father and activist family. Having spent her childhood in Kenya and Canada, she completed her education at Macalester College in the United States and the International School in Kenya.
Activism and Social Justice
Returning to South Africa in 1997, Msimang embarked on a career in human rights and social justice. She held various roles, including working as a policy consultant on gender issues for UNAIDS and as the Executive Director of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa.
Writing Career
"Always Another Country" (2017)In her memoir, "Always Another Country," Msimang recounts her experiences as an exile and her return to a transformed South Africa. The book garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, exploring themes of home, belonging, and the complexities of exile.
"The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela" (2018)
Msimang's biography of anti-apartheid activist and former wife of Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, titled "The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela," delved into the life and legacy of a controversial figure.
