Childhood and Early Football Career
Born and raised in England, Ashley Mawson began his football journey at the tender age of nine, joining the Reading academy. However, at the age of 15, he was released by Reading and went on trials with AFC Bournemouth and Millwall.
Brentford Academy and Professional Debut
In the summer of 2010, Mawson found a home at the Brentford academy. He made his way through the youth ranks and, in the 2011/12 season, established himself as a key player for the club's reserve team. In April 2012, his talent was recognized with a two-year professional contract.
Loan Spells and Injury Recovery
Mawson's progress was hindered by a meniscus tear in 2014, which threatened his career. However, he underwent surgery and successfully recovered from the injury. During his time at Brentford, he gained valuable experience on loan at Maidenhead United, Luton Town, Welling United, and Wycombe Wanderers.
Departure from Brentford and Move to Barnsley
Despite his contributions to Brentford, Mawson opted not to extend his contract and left the club on 30 June 2015 as a free agent. Shortly after, he joined Barnsley on a three-year deal.
Barnsley Success and Promotion
Mawson quickly made an impact at Barnsley, scoring his first goal for the club against Millwall on 18 August 2015. He played a pivotal role in Barnsley's promotion to the Championship in the 2015/16 season, starting 58 games and scoring 7 goals, including a crucial penalty in the play-off final victory over Millwall.
Swansea City and Premier League Debut
Mawson's impressive performances earned him a move to Premier League side Swansea City on 30 August 2016. He made his league debut against Watford on 22 October 2016 and scored his first goal for the club against Crystal Palace on 3 January 2017.
England Under-21 and Senior National Team
Mawson represented England at the Under-21 level, making six appearances and scoring a goal against Slovakia at the 2017 European Under-21 Championship. In March 2018, he received his first call-up to the senior England squad for friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.
