Life and Career of Lieutenant General Heinz Krause
Early Life and Political CareerHeinz Krause was born into a family of a driver and pursued a career in administration. He became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of East Germany (SED) in 1946 and joined the People's Police in 1948, initially serving in Dresden.
Military Service and Training
Krause studied at the People's Police School in Torgau and held various positions within the People's Police until 1953. He then attended the Friedrich Engels National People's Army (NVA) Military Academy from 1957 to 1962, earning a diploma as a military specialist.
Command and Staff Roles
Following his graduation, Krause served as Deputy Commander for Political Affairs in the 7th Motorized Rifle Regiment "Max Roscher" from 1962 to 1964, and later became its commander from 1964 to 1970. In 1970, he was sent to Moscow to study at the General Staff Academy of the Soviet Union.
Senior Appointments
Upon his return to East Germany, Krause became Deputy Commander for Combat Training in the 11th Motorized Rifle Division (MSD) in Halle. He commanded the division from 1974 to 1977. From 1977 to 1979, he served as Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the 3rd Military District in Leipzig. He was promoted to Major General in 1977.
Ministry of National Defense
In 1980, Krause was appointed Head of Inspection Administration in the Ministry of National Defense. Two years later, he became Head of the NVA Reconnaissance Directorate. On March 1, 1986, he was promoted to Lieutenant General.
Post-Cold War
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Krause was relieved of his position and briefly headed the Information Center of the Ministry of National Defense. He was discharged from service on September 30, 1990.
