Biography of Jacob Delagardi
Jacob Delagardi, a Swedish general and active participant in the Polish-Swedish intervention in the period after, was born on June 20, 1583, in Reval, to a Swedish military family of French origin.
Early Military Career
In 1609, he led a support detachment sent by the Swedish king, Charles IX, to assist Vasily Shuisky against Polish interveners. Together with the troops under the command of Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky, Delagardi defeated the Poles near Tver and liberated the Trinity Lavra. In March 1610, he entered Moscow but was defeated at Klushino and forced to retreat.
Later Military and Political Roles
In 1617, Delagardi participated in the conclusion of the Stolbovo Peace. From 1619, he served as the Swedish governor in Reval, and from 1622, he held the position of General Governor of Livonia. From 1632 to 1644, he served as a member of the regency council under Queen Christina.
Legacy and Death
Jacob Delagardi passed away on August 12, 1652, in Stockholm. His military career and contributions to Swedish diplomacy during the Polish-Swedish intervention and his later political roles have left a lasting impact on Swedish history.
