Alfred E. Mann: The Visionary Inventor and Philanthropist
Early Life and EducationAlfred E. Mann was born in Portland, Oregon in 1925 to English and Polish parents. After graduating from high school, he moved to Los Angeles, California in 1946. There, he pursued higher education at the University of Los Angeles, earning a prestigious Bachelor of Science and Arts degree and a doctorate in science. His academic endeavors focused primarily on mathematics and nuclear physics. Mann also received honorary degrees from the University of Southern California, The Johns Hopkins University, Western University, and the Technion Institute in Israel.
Aerospace and Biomedical Innovations
In 1956, Mann founded Spectrolab, his first aerospace company. This was followed by the establishment of Heliotek, which became a leading supplier of solar cells for spacecraft. Together, these companies have provided power for over a hundred spacecraft and played a role in the lunar program.
In 1960, Mann sold his companies to Textron, but continued to lead them until 1972. He subsequently turned his attention to biomedical devices, founding Pacesetter Systems, which manufactured electronic pacemakers. He then established MiniMed, which developed insulin pumps and other medical devices. Mann also founded Advanced Bionics.
Current Endeavors
Today, Mann is involved with numerous organizations, including MannKind Corporation (a biopharmaceutical company), Second Sight (a medical device company for vision restoration), Bioness (a provider of neuromodulation therapies), Quallion, LLC (a developer of implantable neurostimulation systems), Stellar Microelectronics (a manufacturer of silicon devices), Southern California Biomedical Council (SCBC or SoCalBio), and Eclipse Aviation (a producer of light aircraft).
Philanthropic Legacy
Mann is renowned for his philanthropic efforts. The Alfred E. Mann Foundation, established in 1985, continues to support research and programs that aim to improve human health.
