Early Life and Education
Alfred M. Gray Jr. was born on June 22, 1928, in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. He graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Gray also received honorary degrees from the University at Albany, Monmouth College, Norwich University, Franklin University, and the National Intelligence University.
Military Career
In 1950, Gray enlisted in the Marine Corps. As he rose through the ranks from private to sergeant, he earned the nickname "Mustang." This term designates Marines who start in enlisted ranks and later become commissioned officers, fostering both officer knowledge and enlisted practicality. Gray served in Korea, the Caribbean, and Vietnam, where he commanded an artillery battalion and a battalion landing team.
Leadership Positions
After Vietnam, Gray commanded the 2nd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Regiment, and Camp Hansen on Okinawa. He also led the 33rd Marine Amphibious Unit and the 4th Marine Amphibious Brigade during the evacuation of Southeast Asia in 1975. Gray's career continued with roles as Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Division, Commanding General of the II Marine Expeditionary Force, and 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1987 to 1991.
Recognition and Legacy
As Commandant, Gray emphasized the Marines' primary duty as infantrymen by wearing a camouflage uniform for his official photograph. He made a cameo appearance in the TV show "Major Dad" and addressed the U.S. Naval Academy graduating class in the 1980s. Gray's principles on leadership include caring for the men and women under one's command. The Gray Research Center at Marine Corps Base Quantico is dedicated in his honor, preserving the Corps' historical records and providing research and educational resources.
