Early Life and EducationFrançois Joseph Marie Wotquenne was a Belgian musicologist and music bibliographer born in Brussels on August 1, 1860. He studied at the Brussels Conservatory, where his teachers included Louis Brassin (piano), Alphonse Mailly (organ), and François Gevaert (theory).
Career at the Brussels Conservatory
From 1894 to 1919, Wotquenne worked at the Brussels Conservatory as a librarian, secretary, and inspector. He compiled and published a catalog of the conservatory's library from 1898 to 1924, which included an appendix of libretti of Italian operas and oratorios from the 17th century.
Travels and Publications
After leaving the conservatory, Wotquenne worked as a regent and taught organ in Antibes, France, from 1921 onwards. During this time, he wrote numerous compositions.
Legacy
The majority of Wotquenne's archive has been housed in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. since 1929. His contributions to music bibliography and his work on the Italian opera and oratorio repertoire remain significant in the field of musicology.
