Early Life and Military Career

Alfredo Guzzoni was born on April 12, 1877, in Mantua, Lombardy. He dedicated his life to military service, ascending the ranks of the Italian Army.

Albanian Expedition and French Alpine Front

In 1939, Guzzoni led the Expeditionary Corps in the Albanian campaign (Operation OMT). After Italy's entry into World War II in 1940, he commanded the 4th Army on the French Alpine front.

Chief of General Staff

In January 1941, Guzzoni was appointed Chief of General Staff of the Italian Armed Forces, replacing General Ugo Cavallero. He oversaw military operations from this high-ranking position.

Sicilian Command

Guzzoni spent 1942 in Sicily as commander of the 6th Corps. In 1943, he shared command of Italian and German forces with Albert Kesselring during the Allied invasion of Sicily.

Arrest and Imprisonment

Following the retreat from southern Italy, Guzzoni was dismissed from his post and retired. However, after September 8, he was arrested by the Italian Social Republic forces and sentenced as a traitor. To escape execution under German control, he subsequently led the forces of the Italian Social Republic.

Later Years and Death

Guzzoni was released after the war and retired to Rome. He passed away in 1965, leaving behind a legacy of military service and a complex role in the aftermath of World War II.
