Jonas Baltakis
Jonas Baltakis (born 1930) is a Lithuanian poet, literary critic, and translator.
Early Life and Education
Baltakis was born in the town of Lėliuose, Lithuania. He graduated from secondary school in Kaunas and went on to earn a degree in Lithuanian language and literature from Vilnius State University, graduating in 1954.
Career as a Literary Critic
After graduating, Baltakis served as a literary staff member with the women's magazine "Tarybinė moteris" ("Soviet Woman") from 1952-1956. He then worked as Head of Department and Editor-in-Chief of the literary magazine "Pergalė" ("Victory") on and off from 1956 to 1990.
Poetry and Publications
Baltakis has published over twenty collections of poetry since 1955, as well as articles on Lithuanian poetry. His poems have been translated into Latvian and Russian.
