Biography of Algirdas Brazauskas
Algirdas Brazauskas was a Lithuanian political figure who served as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania. He played a key role in the political reforms that followed Mikhail Gorbachev's announcement of perestroika.
Leader of Democratic Labour Party
Brazauskas became the first secretary of the Communist Party of Lithuania and spearheaded its reform, renaming it the Democratic Labour Party. He successfully led the party's breakaway from Moscow's control, asserting Lithuania's independence.
Chairman of the Seimas and President
In 1992, Brazauskas was elected as the Chairman of the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania. A year later, he assumed the position of the President of the country. During his tenure, Lithuania celebrated its 12th anniversary of independence, and Brazauskas formed the 12th government in honor of the occasion.
Return to Power as Prime Minister
In September, as a veteran of the Lithuanian political scene, Brazauskas turned 69 years old. Despite his age, he made a surprising comeback to politics and became the Prime Minister of Lithuania.
