Gitanas Nausėda: President of Lithuania

Gitanas Nausėda (born 1964) is a Lithuanian economist and politician who has served as the President of Lithuania since July 12, 2019.

Educational Background

Nausėda received his secondary education at Klaipėda Secondary School No. 5 from 1970 to 1981. He also attended Klaipėda Music School and sang in the boys' choir "Gintarėlis." From 1982 to 1987, he studied industrial economics at Vilnius University, where he later earned a doctoral degree in social sciences in 1993 with a thesis on tax policy in periods of inflation and stagflation.

Economic Career

From 1987 to 2004, Nausėda taught economics at Vilnius University. He also held positions at the Mannheim University in Germany, the Institute of Economics and Privatization, and the State Price and Competition Control Board. From 1996 to 2000, he served as director of the Monetary Policy Department of the Bank of Lithuania. From 2000 to 2008, he worked as an advisor to the chairman of AB Vilniaus Bankas.

Political Career

Nausėda first entered politics in 2004, when he supported the presidential campaign of Valdas Adamkus. In 2018, he announced his candidacy for the Lithuanian presidential elections in 2019. He came in second place in the first round but won the second round against Ingrida Šimonytė, securing 65.86% of the votes. He took office on July 12, 2019.

Family and Personal Life

Nausėda's father, Antanas, was an engineer, while his mother, Ona, was a physics and mathematics teacher. He has one sister, Vilija. Nausėda married Diana Nepvaitė-Nausėdienė in 1990, and they have two daughters, Gedailė and Ugnė.

His hobbies include chess, reading, sports, and playing the guitar. He has also been collecting antique books since 1997.
