Algirdas Jonas Budrys: American Science Fiction Author, Critic, and Editor
Born in Konigsberg, Germany, to a Lithuanian family, Algirdas Jonas Budrys' real name was Algirdas Jonas Budrys. In 1936, his father, Jonas Budrys, was appointed Lithuania's consul general in New York City, and the family relocated to the United States.
Budrys studied at the University of Miami (1947-49) and Columbia University (1951-52). He married Edna Dune in 1954 and had four sons.
Career as Editor and Mentor
Budrys served as an editor for various Chicago publishing houses and advertising agencies from the 1960s to the 1970s. Concurrently, he taught writing to aspiring science fiction writers and became recognized as one of the best in his field.
From the early 1980s, Budrys was the editor of the "Writers of the Future" anthology series, sponsored by L. Ron Hubbard and the Church of Scientology. He also published the science fiction magazine "Tomorrow Speculative Fiction" from 1993 to 1997.
Literary Contributions
Budrys' literary career began in 1952 with the short story "High Purpose." Starting in 1965, his reviews were regularly featured in leading American science fiction magazines such as Galaxy and Magazine Fantasy and Science Fiction.
