Early Life and Education

Ali Javan was born in 1926 in Tehran, Iran, to an Azerbaijani family. He began his studies at the University of Tehran in 1947, where he earned his undergraduate degree.

Emigration to the United States

In 1948, Javan emigrated to the United States, where he continued his studies at Columbia University. He received his PhD in physics in 1954.

Bell Telephone Laboratories and MIT

After graduating, Javan joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey (1958-1961). He then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1960, where he became a full professor in 1964.

Laser Inventor and Pioneer

The Gas Laser

In 1960, Javan became renowned for his invention of the gas laser, the first continuously operating laser, along with his colleagues W. Bennett and D. Herriott. This breakthrough paved the way for the use of lasers in fiber optic telecommunications and holographic technologies.

Non-Linear Spectroscopy

Javan's research also laid the groundwork for non-linear spectroscopy. He discovered the Lamb dip, a phenomenon in which the output power of a laser decreases at the center of its amplification line (1963, with C. Townes, W. Bennett, and W. Lamb).

Measurement of the Speed of Light and Laser Spectroscopy

Javan developed methods for measuring the absolute frequency of light oscillations and non-linear fluorescence (1970). He also made significant contributions to the study of spectroscopic line narrowing.

Legacy and Honors

Ali Javan is often referred to as the "Father of the Laser" and the "Eastern Einstein". His inventions and discoveries have had a profound impact on medical, telecommunications, and information technologies.

Javan is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Trieste Foundation for the Advancement of Science. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Albert Einstein World Medal of Science and the Fredric Ives Medal from the Optical Society of America.
