Early Life and Education

Ali Lamine Zeine was born in 1965. He holds degrees from the Center for Financial, Economic, and Banking Studies in Marseille and the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.

Government and Finance Career

Zeine's career in government and finance began with roles as the African Development Bank's permanent representative in Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, and Gabon. In 2003, he became Niger's Minister of Economy and Finance.

Prime Ministership

On August 8, 2023, the military junta appointed Zeine as Niger's Prime Minister. This appointment came after the previous President, Mamadou Tandja, was overthrown in a coup.

Controversy and Imprisonment

In 2009, Zeine faced accusations of stealing funds from an oil contract between Niger and China. These accusations led to the arrest and imprisonment of journalist Boussada Ben Ali, who had reported on the alleged theft.

Military Coup and House Arrest

After the military coup in 2010, Zeine was one of three ministers placed under house arrest. The junta expressed concerns about potential security risks due to his involvement in sensitive financial matters.

Calls for Release

The National Movement for the Society of Development party demanded the release of Zeine and other arrested officials after the coup.
