Hamani Diori: Pioneer of Niger's Independence

Early Career and Political Rise

In 1958, Hamani Diori led the provisional government of autonomous Niger. The following year, he became Prime Minister after his Progressive Party of Niger (PPN) emerged victorious in the elections. The PPN soon became the sole political party in the country.

Presidency and Independent Niger

After Niger gained independence from France on August 3, 1960, Diori was elected as the country's first president. He was re-elected in 1965 and 1970 within the framework of a one-party state.

Overthrow and Exile

On April 15, 1974, Diori was overthrown by the military led by Seyni Kountché. He was sentenced to six years in prison. After completing his sentence in 1980, he was placed under house arrest and later exiled to Morocco in 1987, where he eventually passed away.
