The 41st Head of the House of Osman

Ali Vasib was the 41st head of the House of Osman from 1977 to 1983. Had he ruled, he would have become Grand Sultan Ali I.

Early Life and Education

Ali Vasib was born in the Çırağan Palace in Istanbul in 1883. He was the only child of Ahmed Nihad and his first wife, Safiye Hanım Efendi. Ali Vasib received his education at the Mekteb-i Sultani and the military college.

Exile and Family Life

At the age of 21, Ali Vasib was exiled along with other members of the dynasty. He spent 10 years living in France. In 1931, Ali Vasib married Emine Mukbile Sultan, the granddaughter of Mehmed V.

Move to Alexandria and Birth of Son

In 1937, the family moved to Alexandria, Egypt. There, Ali and Emine had their only child, Osman Selahaddin, in 1940.

Head of the Dynasty and Passing

In 1977, following the death of Mehmed Abdulaziz, Ali Vasib became the head of the dynasty. He passed away in Alexandria in 1983 and was initially buried there. In 2007, at the initiative of his son, Ali Vasib was reburied in the tomb of Sultan Reshad.

Writings in Exile

While in exile, Ali Vasib kept diaries that described his experiences. These diaries were later published by his son.
