Alice Brady: A Broadway Star and Hollywood Legend
Early Life and Career BeginningsAlice Brady was born Mary Rose Brady in New York City. Inspired by her father, theatrical producer William Brady, she embarked on her acting career at 18, performing on Broadway.
Transition to Film
In 1913, Brady's father began producing films. She made her debut in silent cinema and starred in 53 silent films over the next decade.
Hiatus and Return
Brady took a 10-year hiatus from film. In 1933, she signed with MGM and relocated to Hollywood. Her first sound film was "When Ladies Meet" (1933).
Academy Award-Winning Performance
In 1937, Brady was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for "My Man Godfrey." The following year, she won the award for her portrayal of Mrs. Molly O'Leary in "In Old Chicago."
Tragic Incident and untimely Death
At the Oscar ceremony, Brady's award was stolen. The thief was never found, and she left the ceremony before being given a replacement.
From 1919 to 1922, Brady was married to actor James Crane. They divorced. Brady passed away on October 28, 1939, from cancer, just days before her 47th birthday. She is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York.
