Biography of Alice Ormsby-Gore

Alice Ormsby-Gore was a British socialite and the youngest daughter of the 5th Baron Harlech. She was a direct descendant of William the Conqueror and French Queen Mary Tudor.

Introduction to the Press

Alice Ormsby-Gore first caught the attention of the press on April 12, 1968, when an article in Time magazine mentioned that Lord Harlech planned to send his fifteen-year-old daughter to Manhattan's Dalton School for the spring semester. She would be staying on the East Side with family friend John Hay Whitney, who had previously served as the US ambassador to the Court of St. James.

Meeting Eric Clapton

In 1968, Ormsby-Gore met legendary guitarist Eric Clapton, and their encounter would later be believed to be the main cause of her tragic fate. The circumstances of their meeting are unclear, with different versions presented in the press. Some claim that they were introduced by Ian Dallas in 1969, while Clapton himself asserts that he was introduced to her by interior designer David Mlinaric, who was working on Clapton's house at the time.

Engagement and Drug Addiction

On September 7, 1969, Clapton and Ormsby-Gore announced their engagement, and she moved to Hurtwood Edge in 1970 to live with him. This period coincided with Clapton's serious struggles with heroin addiction, which he had developed in an attempt to cope with his infatuation for Patti Boyd, the wife of George Harrison. Unfortunately, Ormsby-Gore also became addicted to drugs during this time.

Failed Wedding and Tragic Events

On March 16, 1970, Time magazine announced their upcoming wedding. It was expected that they would marry with the blessing of Ormsby-Gore's father, although Lord Harlech appeared to prefer giving his daughter complete freedom. The wedding, however, never took place. Clapton later revealed that he did not have strong feelings for Ormsby-Gore, while she was deeply in love with him.

After overcoming her drug addiction with support from her family, Clapton decided to break off their engagement. In 1974, Ormsby-Gore tragically discovered her older brother Julian dead from gunshot wounds in his apartment, which was believed to be a suicide.

Death and Legacy

In 1985, William Ormsby-Gore, Alice's father, died in a car accident. His title passed to Julian Ormsby-Gore, and after his death in 1995, it went to Francis Ormsby-Gore, the youngest of the sons. On April 21, 1995, Alice Ormsby-Gore was found dead in a rented room in Bournemouth, Dorset. Her death was attributed to a heroin overdose. She died in poverty, despite being the daughter of an inherited lord and ambassador. The news of her death was reported by The Independent. Tragically, Alice did not live to see her 43rd birthday by just five days.
