Biography of Alisha Ashley
Early Life and CareerAlisha Ashley was born on August 23, 1967, in Jamaica. At a young age, she moved to the United States and currently resides in Long Island, New York. She trains at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn. Ashley began her career in kickboxing in April 1995, setting a new record (10-0-1) among amateurs. However, her impressive results were also seen in the boxing arena in the early stages of her career. In 1996 and 1997, she became the champion of the New York 'Golden Gloves' tournament, and in 1997 and 1998, she won the gold medal at the National Women's Amateur Boxing Championship in the 125-pound weight category.
Professional Career
Ashley made her professional debut on January 29, 1999, in Atlantic City, defeating world kickboxing champion Lisa Howarth. She quickly rose through the ranks in the super bantamweight division, defeating veteran boxer Bonnie Canino in Tunica, Mississippi, in May 1997. Ashley won the WIBF lightweight championship by defeating Laura Serrano in Anaheim, California, in May 1998. She successfully defended her title against Marcela Acuca in Cordoba, Argentina, in November 2002. Ashley also won the IWBF super bantamweight championship in a rematch against Acuca in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in June 2003.
Recent Matches and Awards
One of Ashley's recent boxing matches took place on April 2, 2010, in Brooklyn, New York, where she emerged victorious against Jackie Trivilino from Plattsburgh, New York. In recognition of her boxing skills and willingness to compete against experienced female boxers, Ashley was named the 'Boxer of the Year' by WBAN in June 2006. She became the first recipient of this title twice in one year. Upon receiving the award, Ashley expressed her gratitude and commitment to upholding the standards of boxing.
