Biography of Alipim Miloradov

Alipim Miloradov was a notable Old Believer monk and a saint of the Russian Orthodox Old Believer Church.

Early Life

Born into a family of petty bourgeoisie in the town of Krylov, Poltava Governorate, Alipim joined the Old Believer Serkovsky Monastery in Bessarabia. He later crossed the Austrian border and became a monk at the Belokrinitsky Monastery, where he adopted the surname Miloradov.

Role in the Old Believer Movement

According to Professor N. I. Subbotin, an opponent of the Old Believers, Alipim was "a very clever, extremely courageous and daring man, fervently devoted to the schism." Together with monk Pavel (Velikodvorsky), he played a pivotal role in finding and inviting a bishop to establish the Old Believer hierarchy (later known as the "Belokrinitskaya").

Accomplishments

Alipim accompanied Pavel on his travels throughout Austria, Moscow, the Middle East, and Constantinople. After Metropolitan Ambrose (Popovich) agreed to lead the Old Believer Church, Alipim traveled to Belaya Krinitsa and then to Russia to inform the faithful. In 1848, he participated in the Slavic Congress in Prague as one of the two Russian delegates, the other being anarchist Mikhail Bakunin.

Later Years and Legacy

Alipim spent the rest of his life as a simple monk at the Belokrinitsky Monastery. He was buried in the monastery cemetery, which is now located in Ukraine. In 2006, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Old Believer Church recognized Alipim and Pavel as locally revered saints.
