Allaverdi Teymur oglu Bagirov: Azerbaijani Officer and National Hero
Early Life and CareerAllaverdi Teymur oglu Bagirov was born on April 22, 1946, in Agdam, Azerbaijan. After graduating from school in 1965, he pursued sports and became the head coach of the Agdam football club "Karabakh." He was also an active member of the Azerbaijan Popular Front.
Black January and the Karabakh War
Following the tragic events of Black January 1990, Bagirov formed a volunteer battalion in Agdam. During the Khojaly massacre, he played a crucial role in rescuing numerous civilians. On June 12, 1992, he participated in the capture of the villages of Aranzamin, Nakhichevanik, Dahrvaz, Mirken, and Pirjamal.
Martyrdom and Legacy
Bagirov deeply believed in the liberation of Stepanakert with his battalion. However, on a mission to inspect an outpost, his vehicle encountered a landmine, killing him and his driver. Armenian commander Vitalik expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news of Bagirov's passing, rebuking Azerbaijani soldiers for not protecting such a valuable asset.
Bagirov was married and had three children, a son and two daughters. By Presidential Decree No. 476 of February 24, 1993, he was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan. Bagirov was buried in his hometown of Agdam.
Honors and Remembrance
The memory of Allaverdi Teymur oglu Bagirov continues to be honored in Azerbaijan. Streets, schools, and sports complexes have been named in his honor. His heroism and sacrifice in the defense of his country remain an inspiration for future generations of Azerbaijanis.
