Biography of Allan Jones
Born on October 14, 1907, in Old Forge, Pennsylvania, Allan Jones was an American actor and singer. His real name was Theodore Allen Jones and he was the son of a Welsh miner. Before pursuing a career in entertainment, Jones worked in a coal mine until 1926. He then received a scholarship to Syracuse University but decided to study music at New York University under composer Claude Warford. He furthered his musical education in Paris under Felix Leroux and in London under Sir Henry Wood.
Broadway Career and Film Success
In 1929, Jones made his Broadway debut and continued to perform on stage and in operettas until 1935. He gained recognition for his roles in the Marx Brothers films "A Night at the Opera" (1935) and "A Day at the Races" (1936), as well as his lead role in the second film adaptation of the classic musical "Show Boat" (1936). His performance in "Show Boat" allowed him to showcase his musical and dramatic talents, beating out established actors Nelson Eddy and John Boles for the role.
In 1937, Jones starred in the musical romantic comedy "The Firefly" where he sang the famous "Donkey Serenade," which became his signature song. However, he began to receive only minor roles at MGM and realized he needed a change. In 1940, he switched to Universal Studios and also appeared in films for Paramount.
Later Career and Personal Life
Jones faced difficulties at MGM due to competition from Nelson Eddy, who saw him as a threat to his own success. Eddy used his influence with MGM executives to minimize Jones' screen time. During the war years, Jones volunteered to perform for servicemen abroad, becoming one of the first artists to do so.
In 1945, Jones left Hollywood and embarked on a two-year tour of Great Britain. Over the next 20 years, he performed in nightclubs, summer theaters, and appeared in several films and TV series. Jones also returned to the stage, touring with productions such as "Man of La Mancha" and other non-Broadway shows. He was also known for his exceptional teaching skills in acting.
Jones continued to work as a singer until the end of his life. He was married four times, including a marriage of over 20 years to actress Irene Hervey. Their son, Jack Jones, became a popular singer and actor, winning two Grammy Awards.
Sadly, Jones faced allegations of cruelty from two of his ex-wives, Irene Hervey and Marjorie Buel. He passed away on June 27, 1992, in New York City at the age of 84, from lung cancer. Allan Jones has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the recording industry.
