R.G.D. Allen was born on June 3, 1906, in Stoke-on-Trent. He attended the Royal Grammar School in Worcester and later studied at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he earned an exceptional distinction in mathematics in 1927.

In 1928, Allen began his academic career as an assistant in the London School of Economics. He rose through the ranks to become Professor of Statistics in 1944 and was appointed Emeritus Professor in 1977. He held the position of Head of the Statistics Department at the London Stock Exchange from 1944 to 1965.

Wartime Service and Government Positions

During World War II, Allen served as a statistician on heavy metals for the Treasury (1939-41), as Director of Research and Statistics for the UK mission in Washington, D.C. (1942-45), and as Director of a Survey of Industrial Capacities for the Ministry of Production (1944-45).

Allen was known for his contributions to economic statistics, mathematical economics, and econometrics. He co-authored a groundbreaking work on consumer behavior with J.R. Hicks and A.L. Bowley and published extensively on econometrics of family budgets.
