Biography of Sarah Allgood
Sarah Allgood was an Irish actress and Oscar nominee. She was born in Dublin and had a sister, Mary O'Neill, who was also an actress. Allgood began her acting career with performances at the Abbey Theatre. In the late 1920s, she started appearing in early Hitchcock films, including "Blackmail," "Juno and the Paycock," and "Sabotage."
In 1941, Allgood was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Beth Morgan in the film "How Green Was My Valley," in the category of "Best Supporting Actress." However, Mary Astor ended up winning the award. Some of her memorable roles also include films such as "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," "Jane Eyre," "Keys of the Kingdom," "The Beautiful Dorsett," and "Cheaper by the Dozen."
Personal Life
In 1916, Sarah Allgood married British actor Gerald Hanson. They had a daughter, but she passed away during the flu epidemic of 1917. A year later, Gerald also died from the same cause. In 1945, Allgood became an American citizen. On September 13, 1950, she died of a myocardial infarction at the age of 70 in her home in the suburbs of Los Angeles.
