Utkarsh Ambudkar was born on December 8, 1983, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Indian immigrants Indu and Suresh Ambudkar. He graduated from Thomas Sprigg Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, and then moved to New York City to attend New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

While studying at NYU, Ambudkar developed a passion for hip-hop and began performing freestyle and participating in rap battles at East Village clubs. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004, he honed his acting skills at the prestigious Stella Adler Studio of Acting.
