Early Life and Education

Allyn Young was born in Kenton, Ohio, in 1874. He displayed remarkable academic prowess from a young age, graduating from Hiram College in 1894 at the age of 16, a record at the time.

Graduate Studies and Mentorship

Young continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, where he studied under notable economists such as Richard T. Ely, William A. Scott, Charles H. Haskins, Frederick Jackson Turner, and Edward D. Jones.

Academic Career in the United States

After a brief stint with the United States Bureau of the Census, Young returned to Wisconsin to teach economics. He received his PhD in 1902 and embarked on a teaching career that took him across the United States, including Western Reserve University, Dartmouth College, and the University of Wisconsin.

Influence in Economic Departments

From 1906 to 1910, Young chaired the economics department at Stanford University. He also held positions at Harvard University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Cornell University. His leadership played a pivotal role in shaping the academic programs at these institutions.

Contributions to War Efforts

During World War I, Young was called upon to serve as the Director of the Bureau of Statistical Research in Washington, D.C. In this role, he played a vital role in collecting and analyzing economic data for the war effort.

International Collaboration

In 1918, Young participated in the group that prepared the economic basis for the Paris Peace Conference. After the war, he returned to Harvard and later joined the London School of Economics in 1927.

Return to Harvard and Tragic End

Young declined an offer to move to the University of Chicago in 1928. Soon after returning to London, he fell victim to the influenza epidemic that gripped the city. Allyn Young succumbed to the disease on March 7, 1929.
