Alma Adamkienė
Early Life and EducationAlma Adamkienė (née Nutautaitė) was born on March 8, 1899, in Šiauliai, Lithuania. Her parents, Stasys Nutautas and Ona Soblytė, were merchants.
In 1944, as the Soviet Army advanced, the Nutautas family emigrated to Germany. In 1949, they moved to the United States. In Germany, Alma completed high school in Eichstätt and studied philology at the University of Erlangen in Bavaria.
Marriage and Family
In 1951, Alma married Valdas Adamkus, who would later become the President of Lithuania.
Career in the United States
In the United States, Alma worked as a laboratory technician in a steel mill and later in an insurance company.
Philanthropic Work and Cultural Advocacy
As the First Lady of Lithuania, Alma Adamkienė was actively involved in charitable and cultural initiatives. She supported various charities, served as the Honorary Ambassador of the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation, and advocated for the promotion of culture.
Alma Adamkienė Foundation
On March 17, 1999, Alma established the Alma Adamkienė Foundation to support children in need. From 1999 to 2003, the foundation raised over 2.5 million litas and distributed material goods worth 2.3 million litas to 35 rural schools, underprivileged children, and pediatric institutions.
Honors and Recognition
Alma Adamkienė was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, First Class, from Ukraine in 1998 for her contributions to strengthening relations between Ukraine and Lithuania.
