Sophie Grégoire Trudeau: Early Life and Family

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau was born on April 24, 1975, in Montreal, Quebec. She spent her childhood in the Montreal suburb of Mount Royal, where she was a classmate and childhood friend of Michel Trudeau, the younger son of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife, Margaret. Grégoire has stated that her "childhood was happy," noting that she excelled academically, made friends easily, and enjoyed sports and the outdoors.

Struggles with Bulimia

Around the age of 17, Grégoire began struggling with nervous bulimia. The problem persisted until she was 20, when she confided in her parents about her illness and began a two-year recovery period. She credits therapy, the support of loved ones, and yoga with helping her overcome the disorder.

Education and Career in Communications

Grégoire attended high school at the private boarding school Collège du Saint-Nom-de-Marie in Outremont. She went on to study at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf before pursuing a degree in commerce at McGill University. However, she soon switched to communications and eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in communications from Concordia University in Montreal.

Early Career in Media

Grégoire's first job was as a secretary and assistant at an advertising firm. She rose to become an account manager, but after three years in advertising, public relations, and sales, she decided to enroll in radio and television school, where she immediately felt, "I have found my calling." Upon graduating, Grégoire landed a job in a newsroom, where she wrote wire copy.

Rise to Entertainment Reporting

As an avid lover of culture, arts, and cinema, Grégoire applied when she heard about an opening for an entertainment reporter at Quebec television channel LCN. She was successful in securing the position. In addition to working as an entertainment reporter for LCN's daily show business segment, she contributed to segments on Salut, Bonjour!, Clin d'œil, and Bec et Museau for TVA, as well as hosting the shows Escales de Rêves on Canal Évasion and Teksho on Canal Z. Grégoire also co-hosted morning shows on radio station CKMF-FM and contributed to the program Coup de Pouce on Radio-Canada.

E-Talk and Charismatic Reporting

In 2005, Grégoire was hired as a reporter for eTalk, CTV's Canadian entertainment news show. She worked as eTalk's Montreal correspondent until 2010, focusing her reporting on charity and celebrity activism.

Philanthropy and Advocacy

Grégoire is actively involved in philanthropy, volunteering with several Canadian charities and not-for-profit organizations. Organizations she supports include Sheena's Place and BACA, which assist those struggling with eating disorders; La Maison Bleue, a support center for at-risk pregnant women; Dove's "Pay It Forward" and Self-Esteem Fund, Girls for the Cure; the Canadian Cancer Society; the Canadian Mental Health Association; the Heart and Stroke Foundation Women's Heart Health Committee; and WaterCan.

In her work with WaterCan, Grégoire traveled to Ethiopia in October 2006 alongside her mother-in-law, Margaret Trudeau, who serves as the organization's honorary president. Their trip was featured in the CTV documentary "Opening the Window: Margaret and Sophie in Ethiopia," which aired in May 2007. Grégoire is the national ambassador for Plan Canada's "Because I am a Girl" initiative and a spokesperson for Shield of Athena, an organization that assists women and children affected by domestic violence. Grégoire also works as a professional speaker, focusing on women's issues.
