Early Life and Family
Alou Diarra was born in the commune of Villepinte, Seine-Saint-Denis, to Malian parents. He has three younger brothers and one sister. One of his brothers, Zanke, is also a footballer and currently plays for French club Aubervilliers in the Championnat National 2. Zanke previously played for the reserve team of professional club Paris Saint-Germain, but left in 2010. Another brother, Idrissa, works in social media management, helping amateur footballers find clubs. Diarra, his brothers, and sister grew up in the Parisian neighborhood of Rose des Vents, located in the neighboring commune of Aulnay-sous-Bois, where his parents still live. He is currently married with two children. On May 28, 2010, in the lead-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Diarra left the national team training camp to be with his wife for the birth of their second child.
Early Club Career
Diarra began his football career with his hometown club, Aulnay. After playing for Aulnay for six years, Diarra travelled back to the town of his birth to join namesake club Villepinte. While playing in Villepinte's youth academy, Alou struggled to impress and earn a trial with a bigger club. He ultimately rejected several offers, most notably from Le Mans, and according to his brother, the struggle made the elder Diarra "very motivated to succeed."
Marseille and Later Career
Diarra signed a three-year contract with Olympique de Marseille on July 4, 2011.
