Alvaro Guevara: A Chilean Artist in England

Early Life and Education

Alvaro Guevara was born into a wealthy family in Chile. In 1909, he left his homeland for England, where he settled in London the following year.

Artistic Journey

Guevara initially enrolled at Bradford Technical College to study textiles. However, his passion for art led him to take painting classes at Bradford College of Art. Despite failing his technical exams at Bradford, he pursued his artistic aspirations and enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1913 to 1916.

Bloomsbury Connections

During his time in England, Guevara became a member of the Bloomsbury Group, an influential circle of British intellectuals and artists. Through the group, he met many notable figures, including Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster.

Personal Life and Travels

Guevara married Meray Guinness, an Irish painter from the aristocratic Guinness family. After their marriage, the couple moved to France.
