Early Life and Education
Anni Sinnemäkiwas born on September 29, 1992, in Tampere, Finland. She grew up in the towns of Hyrynsalmi and Jokela. In 2007, she witnessed the tragic school shooting in Jokela as a ninth-grader.
In 2011, she completed high school in Jokela and went on to study political science at the University of Helsinki. She graduated with a Bachelor of Political Science degree in 2014, specializing in global politics.
Career in Non-Profit and Student Politics
During her university years, Sinnemäki was active in student politics. She served on the board of the Helsinki University Student Union (2015), the Helsinki University Collegium (2014-2016), and the National Union of University Student Associations (2016).
She also worked for the non-profit organization Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) and was a project manager at Mielenterveyspooli, a mental health organization, from 2018 to 2020.
Political Journey
Sinnemäki made her first bid for elected office in the 2012 municipal elections, but was not elected. In the 2017 municipal elections, she received 1621 votes and was elected to the Helsinki City Council, where she served as a member of the Green League party.
She ran for parliament in the 2015 and 2019 elections, but was not elected. In 2019, Sinnemäki co-founded the civil initiative Terapiatakuu ("Guarantee for Therapy") to promote mental health.
Member of the European Parliament
In the 2019 European Parliament elections, Sinnemäki received 13,687 votes and became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). She is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and a vice-chair of the Coalition for Mental Health at the WHO's European Regional Bureau.
Personal Life
Anni Sinnemäki currently resides in the Vuosaari district of Helsinki.
