German Gardener and Botanist
Alwin Berger was a renowned German gardener and botanist specializing in the systematics of succulent plants, particularly cacti and agaves. He authored numerous books on succulents, including the first book dedicated solely to agaves, titled "Die Agaven."
Botanical Director at Giardini Botanici Hanbury
From 1897 to 1914, Berger served as the director of the botanical garden Giardini Botanici Hanbury in Ventimiglia, Liguria, Italy. During his tenure, he significantly expanded the garden's collection of succulents.
Description and Classification of Plants
Berger was responsible for describing approximately 40 plant genera from three families: Aloaceae (Aloes), Cactaceae (Cacti), and Crassulaceae (Stonecrops). He also described numerous plant species.
Taxonomic Legacy
Berger's taxonomic contributions were substantial. He established the genus Bergerocactus (within the Cactaceae family) and the genus Bergeranthus (within the Aloaceae family), both of which bear his name as a tribute to his work.
