Amanda Lynn Swafford, an American model, was born on October 30, 1978 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. However, she moved with her family to Plano, Texas at a young age. She attended Plano East Senior High School and was involved in track and field. At the age of 14, she was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative disease that would eventually lead to her becoming almost completely blind.

In 2000, Swafford earned a Bachelor's degree from Austin Community College in Rio Grande, Texas. Before participating in Tyra Banks' show, she worked as a model in Austin under the name Amanda Mellard and was highly regarded in the local fashion community. Swafford later joined the third season of "America's Next Top Model," which aired from September 22 to December 15, 2004.

During the show, the judges noticed Swafford's striking blue eyes, which were her most captivating feature. However, her low vision due to retinal degeneration posed a significant challenge, especially in low light conditions. Despite this, Swafford's determination to participate in the show was unwavering and she excelled in it.

Swafford made it to the final round of the competition alongside Eva Pigford and Yaya Da Costa. Although the judges had a difficult decision to make, Swafford ultimately did not win. However, former model and judge Janice Dickinson expressed her admiration for Swafford, saying "I love you!"
