Early Life and Education

Amanda Tapping was born on August 28, 1965, in Rochford, Essex, England. At the age of three, she moved with her family to Ontario, Canada. Tapping attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute, where she excelled in ecology and drama. After graduating in 1984, she focused her attention on dramatic arts and enrolled in the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Arts in Ontario.

Career

After completing her education, Tapping continued to pursue theater while also appearing in various television commercials. She landed several roles in TV shows and movies, including "The Outer Limits" and "The X-Files." In the early 1990s, she worked with the comedy troupe "Random Acts" alongside Katherine Jackson and Anne Marie Kerr in Toronto.

Tapping gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Samantha Carter in the science fiction series "Stargate SG-1," which premiered in 1997. She reprised her role as Samantha in the spin-off series "Stargate Atlantis," where her character became the new leader of the expedition. However, in the fifth season of "Stargate Atlantis," Tapping appeared only as a guest star as she decided to focus on another project - the series "Sanctuary."

"Sanctuary," a new science fiction project consisting of two seasons and 26 episodes, premiered in 2007 on the internet as eight webisodes. Tapping not only played a role in the series but also served as an executive producer. Eventually, "Sanctuary" grew to four seasons, with new episodes airing in the fall of 2001.

Personal Life

As of 2004, Tapping resided in Vancouver, British Columbia, with her husband Alan Kovacs. The couple welcomed their daughter on March 22, 2005. Tapping has two brothers, Richard and Christopher. Christopher, her twin brother, works as a database administrator in Toronto. Her third brother, Steven, passed away in December 2006.

Awards and Achievements

In 2007, Tapping won the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Female Performance for her role in the comedy short film "Breakdown" directed by John Bolton.

Directing Career

Tapping made her directorial debut in the seventh season of "Stargate SG-1" with an episode titled "Resurrection," written by fellow cast member Michael Shanks. She also directed the seventh episode of "Sanctuary" titled "Veritas."

Notable Work

One of Tapping's notable projects is the family drama "Rent-a-Kid" (1995) directed by Fred Gerber, starring Leslie Nielsen and Christopher Lloyd.
