Amelita Galli-Curci (1882-1963) was an Italian singer, specifically a coloratura soprano. She was born on November 18, 1882 in Milan. Galli-Curci primarily learned the art of singing on her own and made her debut on the opera stage in the role of Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto" in Trani, southern Italy in 1906. She later performed in Rome.
Career and Achievements
In 1916, Galli-Curci brilliantly performed the role of Gilda on the stage of the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Her performance received great acclaim and established her as a renowned soprano. In 1920, she was accepted into the Metropolitan Opera in New York and sang there for 10 years. During her time at the Metropolitan Opera, Galli-Curci showcased her talent in various roles, including Lakmé in Delibes' opera, Mimi in Puccini's "La bohème," Violetta in Verdi's "La traviata," Elvira in Bellini's "I puritani," and Leïla in Bizet's "Les pêcheurs de perles."
Later Life and Legacy
In 1930, Galli-Curci retired from her opera career, but continued to perform in concerts for the next seven years. She dedicated herself to sharing her vocal abilities and passion for music with audiences around the world. Galli-Curci passed away on November 26, 1963 in La Jolla, California. She is remembered as one of the greatest coloratura sopranos of her time, leaving behind a legacy of extraordinary talent and contributions to the world of opera and classical music.
