Player Career
Américo Rubén "El Tolo" Gallego was an Argentinian footballer who played as a central midfielder during his active career. He represented the Argentina national team from 1975 to 1982, making 73 appearances and scoring 3 goals. Gallego was a key member of the squad that won the 1978 FIFA World Cup and also participated in the 1982 World Cup. At club level, he played for Newell's Old Boys and River Plate, winning two Argentine league titles, the Copa Libertadores, and the Intercontinental Cup.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Gallego embarked on a successful coaching career. He led his teams to five national championship titles, including four in Argentina with three different clubs (River Plate, Independiente, Newell's Old Boys). This achievement matched the record set by José Yudica, who also won league titles with three different Argentinian teams. Gallego also became the only Argentinian coach, besides Alfredo Di Stéfano, to win championships with four different teams in different countries, having guided Toluca to the Mexican league title in 2005.
International Coaching
From 1995 to 1999, Gallego worked as an assistant coach for the Argentina national team, supporting his friend Daniel Passarella.
