Early Life and Career
Sergei Ovchinnikov was born in the Sverdlovsk region and began his volleyball career at a sports boarding school. He played for several teams, including CSKA-2, SSKA (Khabarovsk), and Neftyanik (Yaroslavl).
Coaching Career
Ovchinnikov began his coaching career in 1998 with Neftyanik (Yaroslavl). He then moved to Neftyanik Bashkortostan (Ufa) in 2001 and to Avtodor-Metar (Chelyabinsk) in 2004. Under his guidance, Chelyabinsk returned to the Super League in 2005-2006.
Moscow Dynamo and Higher Levels
Ovchinnikov joined Moscow Dynamo's coaching staff in 2006, winning the Russian championship that year. He led Dynamo-RSU, Dynamo Moscow's reserve team, to third place in the Russian Championship in 2007-2008.
In 2008-2009, Ovchinnikov coached Fakel Novy Urengoy, but the team finished 11th and was relegated from the Super League. However, he received an invitation to lead Omsk's Omička, with whom he won a bronze medal in the Russian Cup in 2009.
Krasnodar Dynamo and Coaching Accolades
In 2010, Ovchinnikov replaced his former adversary at Krasnodar Dynamo. Under his leadership, Krasnodar won medals in all competitions: silver in the Russian Cup and EKV Cup, and bronze in the Russian Championship.
Ovchinnikov also guided the Russian Student team to a bronze medal at the 2011 World University Games.
Russian Women's National Team
On October 21, 2011, Ovchinnikov was named acting head coach of the Russian Women's Volleyball Team. He successfully qualified the team for the European Olympic qualification tournament and was officially appointed head coach on December 14, 2011.
Under Ovchinnikov's guidance, the Russian team secured an Olympic berth through the World Qualification Tournament in Japan. However, tragedy struck when Ovchinnikov passed away during a training camp in Croatia on August 29, 2012.
