Biography of Amintore Fanfani
Amintore Fanfani was an Italian politician who played a significant role in the political arena of Italy in the 20th century. Born in 1908 in Pieve Santo Stefano, Italy, Fanfani had an illustrious career that spanned several decades. He held numerous high-ranking positions, including temporary President of Italy in 1978, multiple terms as Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign and Internal Affairs, and Chairman of the UN General Assembly.
Early Life and Education
Fanfani began his academic pursuits at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan from 1926 to 1930. He continued his studies at the same university, becoming an assistant and then a lecturer from 1932. Concurrently, he received military training in Spoleto and attained the rank of junior lieutenant. In 1936, Fanfani became the head of the Department of Economic History at the Catholic University of Milan.
Exile and Political Career
During the period of September 17, 1943, to July 6, 1945, Fanfani went into exile in Switzerland. He taught at the universities of Lausanne and Geneva and established a university for Italian refugees. After returning to Italy in September 1945, Fanfani became the Director of Research, Propaganda, and Press Department of the Christian Democratic Party of Italy.
In April 1946, Fanfani became a member of the National Council and Central Leadership of the Christian Democratic Party of Italy. He was also a deputy in the Constitutional Assembly from June 1946 and served on the editorial committee for the republican Constitution of Italy (Commission 75).
Ministerial Positions and Prime Minister
Fanfani held several ministerial positions, including Minister of Labor in the fourth and fifth Governments led by de Gasperi from 1947 to 1950, and Minister of Agriculture in the sixth Governments led by de Gasperi and Pella from 1951 to 1953.
In July and August 1953, Fanfani served as the Minister of Internal Affairs in the eighth Government led by de Gasperi and then in the eighth Government led by Pella from August 1953 to January 1954. In January and February 1954, he became the Prime Minister of Italy, leading the first Fanfani Government.
Fanfani went on to serve as the Secretary of the Christian Democratic Party of Italy from 1954 to 1959 and held the positions of Prime Minister from July 1960 to February 1962 (second Fanfani Government), from February 1962 to June 1963 (fourth Fanfani Government), and from April 1965 to December 1965.
Later Political Career
From 1968 to 1973, Fanfani served as the President of the Senate of Italy. In March 1972, he became a Senator for life. He held the position of Secretary of the Christian Democratic Party of Italy from 1973 to 1975 and resumed his role as President of the Senate of Italy from 1976 to 1982.
Fanfani then served as the Prime Minister of Italy from December 1982 to August 1983 (fifth Fanfani Government) and as the President of the Senate of Italy from 1985 to 1987. In April and July 1987, he once again became the Prime Minister of Italy (sixth Fanfani Government) and also served as the Minister of Internal Affairs from 1987 to 1988. From April 1988 to July 1989, he held the position of Minister of Budget and Economic Planning.
After his active political career, Fanfani served as the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Senate of the Italian Republic from 1994 to 1996. He passed away on November 20, 1999, leaving behind a legacy as one of the dominant figures in Italian politics.
