Biography of Amon Tobin

Amon Tobin is an electronic musician, DJ, and music producer known for his unique sound and experimental approach to music. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he moved to the UK at a young age and later returned to Brazil. As a teenager, Tobin developed a passion for hip-hop, jazz, and South American music, spending much of his time listening to his favorite records.

At the age of 17, Tobin began his first musical experiments using a small sequencer, which he affectionately called his "little horrible Casio keys." Unsatisfied with his life, he moved to Portugal with all his equipment, playing in street discotheques and blues bands on harmonica, saxophone, guitar, and keyboards.

In 1994, Tobin returned to the UK and settled in Brighton, where he started recording his own tracks and sending them to various record labels. Only two labels, HOS and Ninebar, responded to his offers. He initially signed with HOS but found the experience to be mediocre. However, working with Ninebar proved to be more productive and interesting. Under the pseudonym Cujo, Tobin released four singles and the album "Adventures in Foam" on Ninebar.

In the early 1995, Tobin, still known as Cujo, began releasing sampled music with a dance sensibility, incorporating fast drum beats and intriguing film samples. Despite lacking a formal musical education, Tobin honed his craft through creative imitation, combining what he heard with his inner feelings. His music became a fusion of different genres, with warm and layered samples.

In the fall of 1996, Tobin signed a contract with Ninja Tune, a renowned record label. His releases under his own name brought him worldwide fame, combining elements of hip-hop, jazz, drum and bass, and Latin American sounds. Tobin continues to work and release music under both his aliases.
