Biography of Damo Suzuki

Damo Suzuki is a singer and musician, best known as the former vocalist of the German band Can. In the late 1960s, Suzuki traveled across Europe, performing as a street musician. During this time, the vocalist Malcolm Mooney left Can, creating an opening for a new vocalist in the band. Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, members of Can, happened to come across Damo Suzuki while sitting in a café in Munich, where he was singing on the street. Impressed by his talent, Suzuki was immediately invited to join the band and made his debut as their vocalist at a concert on the same evening.

Suzuki was a member of Can from 1970 to 1973 and contributed to several highly acclaimed albums like "Tago Mago" and "Ege Bamyasi". His singing style was characterized by improvised and partially incomprehensible lyrics, often in a mixture of languages. His vocals were accompanied by Can's psychedelic krautrock sound. It is worth noting that Suzuki was considerably younger than the other members of the band, leading to some difficulties in understanding and communication. However, guitarist Michael Karoli, who was relatively close in age to Suzuki, formed a strong bond with him and later collaborated on Suzuki's project called "Damo Suzuki's Network".

After the release of the album "Future Days", Damo Suzuki left Can and took a hiatus from music for ten years, becoming a member of Jehovah's Witnesses and marrying a German woman who was also a member of the same faith. In 1983, he resumed his creative endeavors and recorded several albums with the band Dunkelziffer in the mid-1980s. Today, Suzuki resides in Germany and leads the project "Damo Suzuki's Network", in which he performs live around the world with various musicians, often local ones, improvising to their music, similar to his approach in Can. Notable musicians who have played with "Damo Suzuki's Network" include Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit from Can, Mani Neumeier from Guru Guru, the Boston post-rock band Cul De Sac, Acid Mothers Temple, members of the band Auktyon, Sergey Letov, and many others. The Fall's album "This Nation's Saving Grace" (1985) features a song titled "I Am Damo Suzuki" dedicated to Suzuki. There is also a rock band called The Mooney Suzuki, named after the surnames of Can's vocalists Damo Suzuki and Malcolm Mooney.
