Amy Davis Irving was born on September 10, 1953, in Palo Alto, California. She is an American actress known for her work in theater, film, and television. Irving comes from a family with a strong background in the arts, as her father, Jules Irving, was a film director, and her mother, Priscilla Pointer, was an actress. Her brother, David Irving, is a writer and director, while her sister, Katie Irving, is a singer.

Growing up, Irving had a multicultural upbringing with Jewish-Welsh roots and a Christian upbringing. Her passion for theater began at a young age when she made her stage debut at just two years old in a play directed by her father, where she played the role of Princess Primrose. At the age of twelve, Irving participated in the Broadway show "The Country Wife," directed by Robert Symonds, who later became her stepfather.

In her late teens, Irving made her serious debut on Broadway in the play "And Chocolate on Her Chin" at the age of seventeen. After completing her studies at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Irving returned to Los Angeles in the 1970s and appeared in various television programs.
