Early Life and Education
Eva Birthistle was born on June 1, 1974, in Bray, Ireland. At the age of 14, her family relocated to Derry, Northern Ireland. Birthistle was raised in the Catholic faith and developed a passion for acting while still a teenager. She attended The Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin to hone her craft.
Television and Film Debut
Birthistle made her television debut in 1995 as Regina Crosbie in the Irish soap opera "Glenroe." A few years later, in 1997, she landed her first film role in Alan Gilsenan's "All Souls' Day." Birthistle went on to star in several Irish films, including "Drinking Crude" (1997) alongside Colin Farrell and "Miracle at Midnight" (1998) with Mia Farrow.
Breakthrough Role
In 2004, Birthistle's career took a major turn when she played the lead role of Roisin Hanlon in Ken Loach's romantic drama "Ae Fond Kiss." Her portrayal of a Catholic school teacher who falls in love with a Muslim man earned her critical acclaim and the London Critics Circle Film Award for Best British Actress of the Year. Birthistle also received two Irish Film & Television Awards for Best Actress for her work in the film.
Continued Success
Following her breakthrough role, Birthistle continued to star in a variety of films and television shows. She appeared in Neil Jordan's comedy-drama "Breakfast on Pluto" (2005), Ol Parker's romantic comedy "Imagine Me & You" (2005), and Lukas Erni's comedy "Save Angel Hope" (2006). In 2006, Birthistle played lawyer Jane Lavery in the political mini-series "The State Within" and portrayed Rembrandt's wife, Saskia van Uylenburg, in Peter Greenaway's historical drama "Nightwatching" (2007).
Recent Work
In recent years, Birthistle has remained active in both film and television. She starred as Detective Superintendent Sarah Cavendish in the ninth season of the police procedural "Waking the Dead" (2010), played Annette Nicholls in the television series "Five Daughters" (2010), and had a main role in the romantic drama "Day of the Flowers" (2012).
Personal Life
On December 31, 2006, Birthistle married Raife Burchell, the drummer of the rock band Jetplane Landing. The couple lives in London with their two children.
