Amy Purdy is an American actress, model, snowboarder, skateboarder, motivator, makeup artist, and philanthropist. Despite the fact that she is missing both legs below the knee, she has achieved incredible success in various fields.
Early Life
Amy Purdy was born in 1979 in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. She grew up as an active girl who was involved in sports and dreamed of becoming a beauty queen. Little did she know that her life would soon take a drastic turn.
A Life-Changing Event
At the age of 19, Amy fell ill and initially believed it was a cold or flu. However, it turned out to be bacterial meningitis, which left her in a critical condition in the hospital. Amy experienced organ failure, including her spleen and one kidney. Despite the odds, her brain and heart miraculously remained unaffected. After undergoing over 30 blood transfusions, Amy fought her way back to life, much to the joy of her family and her father, who later donated one of his kidneys to her.
A New Life Begins
With the loss of a kidney, spleen, and both legs below the knee, Amy Purdy faced the challenge of adapting to her new body and the emotional pain of the injustice she had experienced. However, she soon realized that life goes on and she still had a desire to be beautiful, engage in sports, learn, pursue her passions, and share her story with the world. Just seven months after standing on prosthetic legs for the first time, Amy started snowboarding and skateboarding.
Achievements and Philanthropy
In 2003, Amy became a motivational speaker and co-founded the organization 'Adaptive Action Sports.' The organization aims to help people with disabilities participate in active sports such as snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing. In the same year, she appeared in Madonna's music video. Amy also served as a speaker for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).
In 2005, Amy made her acting debut in the film "What's Buggin Seth" directed by Eli Steele. She also participated in the 21st season of the popular television show "The Amazing Race" with Daniel Gale, although their journey was short-lived as they finished second and became the 10th team out of 11.
Besides her accomplishments in sports and acting, Amy has worked as a model and has participated in several photoshoots. In an interview, she shared the promises she made to herself on the night before her leg amputation, including never feeling sorry for herself, helping others, and, most importantly, getting back on a snowboard.
