Biography of Anastas Dragomir

Anastas Dragomir, an outstanding Romanian inventor, was born on February 6, 1896, in Braila, a small town in eastern Romania. He was the sixth child in his family. After receiving his education, Dragomir worked in several aviation factories in France. The young Romanian inventor was particularly interested in the problem of saving pilots and passengers in accidents. On November 3, 1928, he obtained a French patent under the title 'Nouveau système de montage des parachutes dans les appareils de locomotion aérienne' (English: 'New system of mounting parachutes in flying machines'). This was truly a new parachute system for aircraft. Each passenger had their own parachute, which allowed the seat with the passenger to be separated from the airplane in critical moments and ejected through a special opening.

Invention of the Ejector Seat Cabin

After several unsuccessful attempts, Dragomir managed to secure funding for his project and began building his 'ejector seat cabin'. The invention was tested on August 28, 1929, on an aircraft operated by Avions Farman, piloted by Lucien Bossoutrot, at Paris-Orly Airport. French newspapers reported that the tests were successful. Following the tests at Paris-Orly Airport, Dragomir returned home to Romania. Later, on October 26, 1929, he successfully repeated the experiment on an 'Avia' aircraft at Baneasa Airport in Bucharest, together with Romanian aviation engineer Captain Constantin Nicolau.

Continued Improvements and Patents

Dragomir continued to refine his invention and obtained Romanian patent No. 40658 in 1950 for his 'parachute compartment'. In 1960, he received patent No. 41424 for transport aircraft equipped with ejector seat cabins.

Legacy and Death

Anastas Dragomir passed away in Bucharest in 1966. His invention of the ejector seat cabin paved the way for modern ejection seats, saving countless lives in aviation emergencies. His dedication to improving safety in aviation continues to inspire future inventors and engineers.
