Anatolii Trofimovich Burkovskii: A Hero of the Great Patriotic War
Born on March 10, 1916, in Novohrad-Volynskyi, Ukraine, Anatolii Trofimovich Burkovskii was a distinguished participant in the Great Patriotic War, earning the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
Early Life and Education
Burkovskii hailed from a working-class family and completed his secondary education at a seven-year school. He pursued higher education at the Kiev Newspaper Technical School and graduated in 1938 from the history faculty of Kharkiv Pedagogical Institute.
Military Service and Combat Exploits
With the outbreak of World War II in June 1941, Burkovskii joined the Red Army. As a major, he actively fought on the South-Western, Kalinin, and 1st Baltic Fronts. During the war, Burkovskii sustained three injuries.
In October and November 1944, he played a crucial role in the storming of Klaipėda, the battles for Liepāja, and the elimination of the Courland enemy group. Notably, he was severely wounded on December 22, 1944, during these intense battles.
Recognition and Honors
For his exceptional bravery, heroism, and military skill, Major Anatolii Trofimovich Burkovskii was bestowed with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945. This honor came with the presentation of the Order of Lenin and the "Golden Star" medal (No. 7303).
Post-War Life
After the war, Burkovskii retired from the military in 1945. He dedicated his post-war years to education, serving as the director of a professional-technical училище coоперации. Burkovskii made his home in Kirovohrad, where he passed away on October 17, 1985.
Legacy and Memorials
In recognition of his war-time service and bravery, a memorial plaque was erected in his honor in his hometown of Novohrad-Volynskyi. Burkovskii remains an esteemed figure, leaving a legacy of courage and sacrifice for future generations.
