Early Life

Anatoliy Orlov was born on January 7, 1925, in the village of Krasnikovo in the Znamensky district of the Oryol region, in a family of civil servants. In 1931, the Orlovs moved to the city of Krasnodon. Anatoliy studied at Secondary School No. 4 named after K.E. Voroshilov. He was passionate about radio and electrical engineering and attended a technical circle. His teacher, A.D. Kolotovich, recalled that one of the rooms in the school was allocated for the circle. "Here you could often see Volodya Osmukhin, Tolya Orlov, and Seryozha Tyulenin. The young technicians read popular technical magazines and debated over radio receiver circuits or the details of some machine." Anatoliy was also skilled at drawing and designing wall newspapers. His drawings were exhibited several times at school exhibitions. When his father, Aleksey Ivanovich, died, Anatoliy, an 8th grade student, left school to help his mother and found work as a locksmith at the Central Electromechanical Workshop.

World War II and Underground Activities

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Anatoliy Orlov volunteered for the Red Army. In late November 1941, he was enrolled in the 38th Separate Volunteer Engineering Regiment as one of the Komsomol members from Krasnodon. He worked on the construction of anti-tank ditches, wire obstacles, and trenches. In May 1942, due to health reasons, he was discharged. During the occupation of Krasnodon, Anatoliy went to work at the winding shop of the Electromechanical Workshop. He soon joined the underground organization "Young Guard". F.P. Lyutikov involved Anatoliy Orlov and Vladimir Osmukhin in carrying out specific tasks, distributing leaflets, and collecting weapons. Through them, he maintained contact with the underground Komsomol. Anatoliy repeatedly disabled electrical equipment at the Central Electromechanical Workshop and actively participated in the work of the underground printing house, which printed leaflets and temporary Komsomol identification cards. During the days of fascist occupation, he was accepted into the Komsomol.

Arrest and Execution

On January 13, 1943, Anatoliy Orlov was arrested and subjected to brutal torture. On the night of January 15, the executioners executed him and threw his body into a mine shaft. He was buried in a mass grave of heroes in the central square of Krasnodon. Anatoliy Alekseevich Orlov was posthumously awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class and the Medal "Partisan of the Patriotic War" 1st Class.
