Early Life and Education
Born in the Soviet Union, Igor Nataf developed a passion for chess at a young age. After graduating from the prestigious Novosibirsk State University with a degree in mathematics and physics, he embarked on a successful academic career, earning a Candidate of Science degree.
Chess Career in the Soviet Union
Nataf's chess prowess emerged in his early twenties, as he triumphed in the All-Russian Tournament for Young Masters in 1969. He continued to excel in Soviet competitions, achieving joint first place in the 1982 Russian SFSR Championship.
International Success
In the early 1980s, Nataf began to make a name for himself on the international stage. He secured top three finishes in tournaments in Sochi, Berlin, and Trnava. His performances also included joint third-fourth places in Vrnjacka Banja and a joint first-second place in the second Havana tournament in 1985.
Representation of France
After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Nataf moved to France and began representing his adopted country. He claimed victory in the French Chess Championship in 1997 and twice finished runner-up (1996, 2001).
Participation in Chess Olympiads
Nataf competed in two Chess Olympiads as part of the French team: the 33rd in 1998 and the 35th in 2002. He contributed to France's performance on the international stage.
