Saint Anatoly the Recluse of the Kiev Caves Monastery

Early Life and Monasticism

Anatoly was a monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery, known for his strict asceticism and miraculous powers. Unfortunately, precise details of his life have been lost to time.

Local Veneration and Inclusion in the Synaxarion

In the late 17th century, Archimandrite Varlaam (Yasynsky) of the Kiev Caves Monastery established the Feast of the Veneration of the Holy Fathers of the Far Caves. Anatoly the Recluse was mentioned in the service composed for this occasion, alongside Saints Spiridon and Nicodemus.

Canonization and Public Veneration

Metropolitan Philaret (Gumilevsky) believed Anatoly lived in the 12th century and practiced asceticism with these other saints. His name was included in the "Description of Russian Saints" in the late 17th century, among the saints of "the city of Kiev."

Public veneration of Anatoly began when the Holy Synod authorized the inclusion of several Kiev saints in the general church calendar in the 18th century. His feast day was set on July 3 to coincide with the name-day of Saint Anatoly the Patriarch of Constantinople.
